CUT(1) User manual CUT(1)
1mNAME
0mcut - cut out parts of each line of a file
1mSYNOPSIS
cut 0m-1mc 0mlist [ files ]
1mcut 0m-1mf 0mlist [ -1md 0mchars ] [ -1msu 0m] [ files ]
1mDESCRIPTION
0m4mcut0m can cut out columns or fields from each line of a file.
Columns are specified by character positions (with tabs
expanded), fields are separated by delimiters (default 4mtab0m &
4mspace0m ) and you select the desired ones. Input is from
4mstdin0m if no files are given.
The following options are recognised:
4mlist0m is a comma-separated list of numbers or ranges (eg
4m1,3-50m represents 1, 3, 4 & 5). 4m-60m is short for 4m1-60m and
4m4-0m for 4m40m-4minfinity0m.
-1mc 0m4mlist0m The 4mlist0m specifies which columns to take from the
files, eg -4mc20m-4m100m would take columns 2 to 10, and -4mc0m-
would take the whole file(s), with tabs expanded into
spaces.
-1mf 0m4mlist0m Select fields specified by the 4mlist0m, which are
separated by the delimiters (see -4md0m). 4mLines0m 4mwith0m 4mbe0m
4mleft0m 4muntouched0m, 4mexcept0m 4mif0m 4mthe0m -4ms0m option is used.
-1md 0m4mchars0m Change the default delimiters (see above).
-1ms 0m Suppress lines with no delimiters (otherwise they are
left completely alone).
-1mu 0m Consecutive delimiters are normally considered as one
(useful if you have a blank separated file). However,
if you want unix behaviour, give this option
(consecutive delimiters indicate blank fields). ( -4mf0m
option only)
1mBUGS
0mLines longer than 255 characters will be split.
